Chilli Pepper

Chilli Pepper

Chilli Pepper

Chilli Pepper is an entertainer from Chicago, Illinois where she has been featured at places like the Baton.  In 2007, Chilli was inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame.

Below is the bio from the Chicago Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame’s Website:

Chilli Pepper, one of Chicago’s most celebrated entertainers, for making herself an early symbol of gender diversity and using her visibility to bring awareness of HIV/AIDS issues to the public.

For more than three decades, Chilli Pepper has entertained thousands of people as a Ffemale impersonator, serving as an ambassador for LGBT communities, building bridges between LGBT and non-LGBT communities, and heightening attention to the issues involved. She is an icon of the LGBT rights movement, having proved herself early as a visible and controversial symbol, gaining significant media exposure in the days when many people hardly spoke of, much less acknowledged, drag, drag queens, or AIDS.
Chilli was one of the first local media personalities to take up the issue of AIDS awareness, helping to bring HIV/AIDS into the homes of Middle America at a time when the president of the United States was not publicly acknowledging the epidemic. Mentions in the Chicago Sun-Times (Irv Kupcinet’s “Kup’s column”), the Chicago Tribune (the “Tower Ticker” and “Inc.” columns), Chicago’s neighborhood Skyline newspaper, and People magazine, plus television appearances on Phil Donahue’s, Oprah Winfrey’s, and Jerry Springer’s shows as well as Chicago’s WGN-TV (Channel 9)—all at a time before Rock Hudson’s death and its revelations rocked the non-LGBT world—brought Chilli into the forefront of the fight to confront AIDS.
When Donna Karan wanted to make a statement at the opening of Barneys New York’s Chicago store, she called on Chilli to model as a mannequin in the main display window at the store’s launch party, which also benefited the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA). In 1979, when Michael Butler premiered the movie Hair in Chicago, Chilli was the “Premiere Entertainment” and introduced drag to an audience who may have thought “drag” applied only to car racing or having a bad day.
To LGBT communities in Chicago and beyond, Chilli’s career of 30-plus years is an exemplar of dedication, professionalism, and success. She has taken the art of female impersonation to new heights; her career at The Baton Show Lounge has helped to put Chicago at the forefront of that field. Since being crowned as the first Miss Continental in 1980, she has become well known across the United States and around the world.
Chilli Pepper has used her dynamic and formidable presence to advance awareness and understanding of the notion that diversity is both healthy and American. She explains who she is without apology, doesn’t care if you accept or like her, and—best of all—challenges us to stand up for ourselves in the same way. She has become a Chicago institution, much like the Water Tower, only with better jewelry.

In Loving Memory of KiArra Cartier Fontaine

KiArra Cartie Fontaine

KiArra Cartie Fontaine

KiArra was an entertainer who last resided in Cleveland, Ohio, but she got her start in Chicago, Illinois under the name of KiArra Lee when she was dared to enter a Halloween contest at the Baton Show Lounge. She was painted by the wonderful Kim Cleveland, who also helped her pick a melody, Diana Ross. She won the contest and hasn’t stopped since.

She then started performing at several clubs in Chicago and doing talent contests including Continental preliminaries. In March of 1995, she relocated to Akron, Ohio. It was there in July of that year, that she won her first title as Miss Akron Newcomer.

In 2001 she made a move to Toledo, Ohio where she became the show director for Caesar’s Show bar for two and a half years. KiArra made her another move to Columbus, Ohio in April of 2006 before moving back Cleveland. She had performed all over the country and has countless titles to her name.

KiArra has had a few names to note. Besides KiArra Lee, she has also been known as KiArra Fontaine Marlowe …and of course many of her friends just call her ‘Kiki’.

At the end of May and the first part of June of 2006, KiArra started two new weekly shows at Somewhere Else Club in Columbus, Ohio. Every Wednesday she hosts ‘Dicks with a Diva’ with the best in hot male erotica and on every Thursday, she hosts ‘Cocktail Talk with KiArra and Guests’ featuring the best in female impersonation.

Sadly KiArra lost her battle to cancer on May 29th 2013.  Our deepest sympathy goes out to all of Kiki’s friends and family during this difficult time. She was a legend and friend to so many during her life and now she will always live on in our hearts as we remember those wonderful times we were blessed to share with her.
