Mag Reiley was entertainer from the Youngstown, Ohio area where she was featured at places like the Blue Note. Affectionately referred to as the “Mother of Youngstown”, she grew up there but was also cast in a show in the 1940’s in New York City. She returned to Youngstown and continued to perform right up until her passing.
Denise Russell, a friend, recalls Mag telling her great stories of the old days of drag when there were no sound systems and the performers all sang live with a small band. Many recall seeing Mag doing one of her signature numbers, ‘New York, New York’ where she was still doing high kicks into her 70’s.
Though Mag passed away several years ago, a fundraiser was held on August 17, 2012 at Club 441 in Warren, Ohio to help pay for a headstone for the late great Mag. Denise Russell headed up this special occasion.
A very special thank you goes out to Denise Russell who provided the picture of Mag and helped with these memories.
