From 1979 through 2005, this pageant was a prelim to Miss Gay America and was known as Miss Gay Indiana America.
After 2005, the pageant separated itself from the Miss Gay America organization and became known as Miss Gay Indiana. The system honors all of the previous Miss Gay Indiana America winners as formers.
In 2018, longtime promoter Cleo Brasher was awarded the Life Time Achievement Award and proclaimed to be the emeritus to the system.

Miss Gay Indiana America 2005
2005 was a controversial year for Miss Gay Indiana America.
Annastacia DeMoore was crowned Miss Gay Indiana America 2005 but later stripped of the title amongst controversy. The title was then offered to 1st Alternate (Samantha Lynn) but they didn’t want it and it was then offered to 2nd Alternate (Erica King) who accepted. This decision was reversed however when MGI/GLP got together and made an executive decision and the title went to the 1st Alternate, Samantha Lynn who is now recognized as Miss Gay Indiana America 2005.
Because of this controversy and this controversial year, that is when Miss Gay Indiana stopped being affiliated with Miss Gay America and became it’s own pageant with the same format as Miss Gay America. However in 2012, the pageant became all inclusive and 2013 was the 1st year to include trans contestants.
